Process

The process called “Waterworks” explores the science of natural phenomena to create art. The quiet energies of nature are co-opted to give form to this work. The process involves the collection of sedimentary patterns that form under water and are impacted by environmental factors present at the time of their making. The work is produced outdoors by submerging painted or unpainted aluminum panels in tanks of diluted pigments. The elements of time, temperature and season begin to "compose" with these alternative criteria. Work produced in freezing temperatures reveal delicate frost patterns. Sediments gather on raised surfaces create the illusion of 3-D imagery. Linear patterns of evaporation mark time in the composition.

Erosion is also present in works exposed to the elements for longer periods of time. This collaboration of science and art is an intended metaphor for the possibilities available to us when we cooperate with the forces of nature.
