Process

Working on various screen surfaces allows for the exploration of visual phenomena that occur through sensory overload caused by layers of multiple grid patterns. We are “tricked” into seeing imagery that exists only in the mind’s eye in the form of various moiré patterns – there is no physical presence of these images. Screen material also allows for the investigation of color and texture in an alternative format. Its porous surface allows background form and color to be juxtaposed, where the interplay of multiple planes creates a visual tension unattainable in conventional methods of applying paint to canvas.

Paint worked between the screen’s apertures also provides unique textural possibilities. Opaque blocks of paint in the composition introduce shadows that help enrich the 3-D quality of the work.
